Dan was raised in rural Oregon, in a family of ten. An early interest was theater, and he holds a Master of Fine Arts in Drama from the University of California-Irvine. He has worked in both acting and writing since the 1980s.
His acting work includes everything from Shakespeare (Edmund in King Lear, Iago in Othello, and the title role in Macbeth) to Chekov (Vershenin in The Three Sisters) to modern plays (Skip in The Hands of its Enemy) to television shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and Unusual Suspects, films, and numerous commercials. Dan has written for newspapers including the Los Angeles Times and magazines like Teaching Theatre. He has worked as an editor, publicist, reporter, educational consultant, technical writer, game show writer, story analyst, and script-rewrite specialist. Writing for PBS' The American President, he interviewed notables such as Colin Powell and James Baker III. He's particularly proud of his work on Masterpiece Theater: The American Collection, an offshoot of that legendary PBS series which focused on American authors like Willa Cather, Langston Hughes, Eudora Welty, and Henry James. His stage play Cyber has been produced throughout the United States. He is currently writing AM/FM, a novel about the early days of rock and roll radio. Happily married for over two decades to his wife Emily, Dan lives in Santa Monica, California.
